As part of the the Windrush: Portrait of a Generation exhibition and in celebration of Black History Month, we invite you to hear from Alford Gardner who served with the RAF as a ground engineer during the war, and travelled to the UK on the Empire Windrush in May 1948 from Jamaica.
He will provide us with his memories of his journey to the UK, and experiences 71 years on since embarking on his new life. He went to Leeds where he’d previously done his RAF training, and began studying Engineering, although he was unable to get a job in this sector, he put his skills to use in factory work. Alford still lives in Yorkshire and is married with eight children, 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren (and counting).
